Canine Good Citizen
Canine Good Citizen Class
This class is open to all dogs, pure-bred or mixed breed. There are practical benefits to CGC training, too. Not only will you and your dog understand the basics of dog training, and master skills like sit, down and stay, but you’ll know your dog will be able to handle itself with grace in a crowd and be a welcomed client at the vet or groomer.
The goal of this class is to prepare the dog and handler for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test which will be offered during the final class. Owners and their dogs who pass have the opportunity to apply for the CGC title or certificate for their dog.
Prerequisite
Basic obedience skills are a prerequisite such as the AKC Home Manners program, S.T.A.R. Puppy, or other basic/beginner obedience training. Dogs should be able to do the following commands on a verbal cue and/or hand signal without luring or continual reinforcement: Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Heel. Training collars such as pinch or prong collars and mobility restricting harnesses are permitted initially, but owners should transition to collars or body harnesses acceptable for CGC testing as soon as possible.
